“If you want a quality,

act as if you already have it.

If you want to be courageous,

act as if you were - and as you act and persevere in acting, so you tend to become.”

- Norman Vincent Peale -

About affirmations

The vast number of self-help books on offer and their increasing popularity are testament to the fact that there are apparently a large number of people out there seeking. Betterment, answers, happiness? Probably all of the above.

So I know I’m not the only one. It is also clear that not all material speaks to everybody in the same way. In addition, it would seem to me that the multi talent I’ve been blessed with (not burdened, remember; this is a positive site ☺), comes with a responsibility to share some of what I’ve learned and created, just in case there are people out there who may benefit from it.

My path has led to a long list of inspirational reading, natural healing methods, spiritual practices and more neutral, practical ‘tools’ like affirmations. I learned early on, from Norman Vincent Peale in The Power of Positive Thinking to ‘Act as if’. Think or say the right words to reprogram whatever you would like to change and - with enough insistence - see yourself transformed, sooner than you think!

I can guarantee that affirmations work. I’ve felt it. Others have seen it in me. I was a very stressed, negative, smaller minded, judgmental being inclined to a victim role, craving validation, attracting illness. I am happily transformed. Myself, my work and my surroundings all benefit.

Many of my affirmations are a mix of my own creation and what I’ve learned. Where this is the case, I will indicate it. The affirmation above ‘I am relaxed, I am whole, I am serene in mind and soul’ for me is a lifesaver. It marks an important turning point during my most stressful job, while at Shell. It is what helped me cope and kept me from burning out. Although I need it less, I still apply it today.
